Building Operation Award

This Award recognises the achievements of the building operator who delivers outstanding building performance from an individual building or a site with several buildings. This will include delivering the comfort levels and working conditions required by the users or occupants, and demonstrating substantially reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions without compromising overall user satisfaction.

Entries may be submitted by any or all members (together) of the project team, and should be for energy management projects where the initial activity was completed during the period 1 April 2011 to 31 August 2012, thus having a full year of operational performance data following completion of the initial energy management interventions. Entries from SMEs are particularly encouraged.

The Building Performance Awards seek to recognise outstanding, measured performance. Entries which include clear evidence of a full year of actual measured energy data and performance of the building in use are strongly preferred by the judges.Winning entries provide clear evidence of how the building really performs in use. Ideally this will include a Display Energy Certificate or an entry into the CarbonBuzz database, but other clear evidence of actual performance is accepted. Where a building is expected to have a DEC by law, then we would expect to receive an up to date DEC as part of the entry package.

Note: to assist entrants with provision of evidence, we accept DECs or CarbonBuzz entries produced during the period from 1 April 2012 to 31 August 2013.

Judging Criteria

The judges will look for entries which are accompanied by thorough evidence of measured building performance over at least a year of operation, such as:

  • Details of the building and its performance requirements
  • Specific energy management measures taken to improve the building performance including changes to the lighting, heating, and cooling provision, including changes to equipment, hours of operation or other control parameters
  • Specific evidence of training and education initiatives to support the programme
  • Evidence of user feedback on the building and satisfaction with the measures adopted
  • Evidence of actual performance based on measured energy consumption
  • A copy of the DEC and associated information and a CarbonBuzz entry (for buildings that are not required to have a DEC a voluntary DEC is strongly encouraged)
  • Evidence of collaboration between members of the project team, including the building occupiers that has contributed to improved performance
  • Any special challenges or problems and how they were overcome
