Client of the Year

This Award recognises outstanding client led initiatives to improve the performance of existing buildings or to deliver excellent performance in new or refurbished buildings - whether individual buildings, a portfolio or a campus. It will be awarded to the client who, in the judges’ view, has done the most to facilitate an outstanding project during the year and to demonstrate how others can achieve similar outcomes.

The Award is open to all client organisations. Entries from SMEs are particularly encouraged.

Eligibility

The Building Performance Awards seek to recognise outstanding, measured performance. Entries which include clear evidence of a full year of actual measured energy data and performance of the building in use are strongly preferred by the judges. Winning entries provide clear evidence of how the building really performs in use. Ideally this will include a Display Energy Certificate or an entry into the CarbonBuzz database, but other clear evidence of actual performance is accepted. Where a building is expected to have a DEC by law, then we would expect to receive an up to date DEC as part of the entry package.

Entries may be submitted by any client organisation for an energy management project or initiative where the initial activity was completed during the period 1 April 2011 to 31 August 2012, thus having a full year of operational performance data following completion of the initial energy management interventions.

Note: to assist entrants with provision of evidence, we accept DECs or CarbonBuzz entries produced during the period from 1 April 2012 to 31 August 2013.

Judging Criteria

The Judges will look for clear evidence of such attributes as:

  • Details of the energy management initiative or strategy
  • Evidence of the measures taken to reduce energy use, including changes to the lighting, heating, and cooling provision, changes to equipment, hours of operation or other control parameters and changing staff or user behaviour by training, education and motivational activities
  • Evidence of actual measured energy performance before and after the initiative, including a DEC and associated information and a CarbonBuzz entry (for buildings that are not required to have a DEC a voluntary DEC is strongly encouraged)
  • Evidence of user feedback on the building(s) and satisfaction with the measures adopted
  • Evidence of collaboration between members of the project team, including the building occupiers that has contributed to improved performance
  • Any special challenges or problems and how they were overcome
  • Specific evidence of how the project or initiative could be applied by other client bodies, such as a website, guidance material or other transferable tools.
